Indonesian Cuisine:

Indonesian cuisine varies by regions and is based on Chinese, European, Middle Eastern, India, Japan and Thailand. The strange thing of Indonesian cooking is, the spices that the islands are so well known for, are rarely used in Indonesian cooking. Some regions use some of these spices but almost all of them add hot chili peppers.

Each province or region has different types of food. The Sumatran eat more beef and the food is more spicy. The Javanese food contains of vegetables, soybeans, chicken and the food tends to be sweeter. In Kalimantan and Sulawesi the beef and fish are the popular food. Roots vegetables and sago are the main food in Irian Jaya. Indonesian people eat a lot of fruit. Since we are living in the hot zone, we have many different kind of tropical fruits. The fruit such as rambutan, variety of mangoes, durian (stinky fruit shaped like football with spikes) but many people enjoy the usual flavors. The most food that found in every meal and every single day is rice. Rice served with side dish of meat and vegetables.

On the streets throughout Indonesia, from sunrise to sundawn, you can hear the special call of the food vendors. The salesman tyring to sell their stuff using loud speaker go around the streets. These food vendors pushing carts, riding bicycles or tricycles, even car. Some of the vendors sometimes park in one place for long time every day, because they have their own daily customers. Now, enough explaining and explore the food and try it so you will know what I'm talking about. Like we always say "Selamat Menikmati" or enjoy the food.
